High-speed trains for the 2012 Olympics
In the run up to the Games millions of pounds are being spent getting more people to use public transport. Travel around London will be made easier by the extention to the East London line providing a rail link around the city avoiding travel to the centre.
Passengers will be able to travel directly from Highbury & Islington to New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon on fast, air-conditioned trains. The southern extention will connect Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction, but this will not be complete until after the Games.
Travellers could take advantage of the high-speed Olympic Javelin shuttle to head to the continent during the games. The service will run between St Pancras International station and Ebbsfleet International station, via Stratford.
As Eurostar trains will not stop at Stratford during the Games passengers will have to change at Ebbsfleet. Journeys from St Pancras are expected to take seven minutes and those from Ebbsfleet 10 minutes, with trains running every six minutes.
As well as improvements to the runways, more than 30 bridges and 20km of roads will be built in and around the Olympic Park. The Greenway project will create a 7km network of green space, footpaths and cycle paths across east London and through the Lea Valley.
